JOB TITLE: Library Assistant

FLSA: Exempt

STATUS: Full-Time (Twelve-Month)

The following duties, responsibilities, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), and physical requirements are intended to designate the general type and level of work being performed. SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Director of Library Services, in coordination with the Vice President of Instruction, the incumbent assists at the Golemon Library on the main campus of Ranger College with circulation operations, cataloging, reference, instruction to students, faculty, and staff, and other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist faculty, students, and patrons in the use of the library and related resources.
  • Assist with management of the day-to-day functions of the library; carry out and enforce policies of the library.
  • Utilize the Koha, LibGuides, and EBSCO Discovery software.
  • Participate in college committees and councils; attend meetings, events, and commencement as required.
  • Assume special responsibilities on assignment by the Director of Library Services, the Vice President of Instruction, or the President.
  • Work nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Travel to and work at satellite campus centers as necessary.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Masters degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or Bachelors Degree and one (1) year directly related work experience or Associates Degree and three (3) years directly related work experience or any combination of college, technical or university education and/or directly related work experience equal to five (5) years. Familiarity with common computer applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite, library information resources, and library information systems.

Preferred: Recent academic library experience.

Preferred: Veteran

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of library print and online resources and related research methods. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to use and assist others with Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to support complex, long-term projects.

Specific key tasks for this position include:

  • Publishing promotional materials on an established schedule, i.e., Golemon Gazette and More Than Just Books
  • Developing tasks and maintaining records for student workers
  • Maintaining special collections, i.e., Robert E. Howard, Texas Collection
  • Plan, promote, and execute library activities, i.e., poetry contests, traveling exhibits
  • Maintain student tutorials
  • Website management

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Moderate physical activity is required with occasional lifting and manipulation of books or objects up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is normally performed in an office setting. Duties may require travel in personal or school-owned vehicles. This position may require evening and weekend work hours.
